Demolition Case Study

Scope of Works

Rankin D&D were appointed by our regular client, Oracle Solutions, to act as subcontractor to complete the hand demolition of a small outbuilding currently used to house an actuator which controls the flow of water beneath. The actuator was now outdated and needing to be replaced with a new unit, which would not require a housing, but the existing unit was to be protected during our works to ensure no materials damaged the existing controls. Whilst a relatively small package of demolition works, with the asbestos removal being undertaken by Oracle Solutions in-house, it needed to be carried out with precision and care to avoid any damage to the existing actuator or for any debris to fall into the water course immediately beneath.

Challenges

The redundant actuator unit needed to be protected throughout the demolition works to ensure no damage occurred and a designed scaffold crash deck was deployed as temporary works to mitigate this risk. In addition, the rear of the outbuilding sat immediately adjacent to a metal grid above the main water course and no debris could enter this as it would cause contamination. Protection measures were applied to the area involved in the form of debris netting together with multiple layers of hardboard to ensure all resultant waste materials were contained prior to clearance from site. All demolition works to the rear elevation were undertaken overhand to avoid any debris falling onto the protection measures wherever possible.

Achievements

Our allowed contract period was up to 1 week and we completed all works including the clearance of all waste within 3 days. To minimise environmental impact, we engaged with a waste recycling company operating within the directly adjacent site to Cliff Quay WRC and segregated all resultant waste prior to disposal using 8-wheeler grab lorries. We also worked collaboratively with Oracle Solutions due to the presence of an asbestos containing DPC (damp proof course) within the outbuilding.
