Demolition Case Study

Scope of Works

Rankin D&D were appointed by our regular client, Camford Construction Management on behalf of Aldi, to act as subcontractor to undertake the complete internal demolition and strip out of a redundant Argos store within a large retail park in East London. The works included the sequential deconstruction of an internal mezzanine encompassing the entirity of the store and the careful deconstruction of the entire front facade to full height. The project had a rigid timescale to complete the works to allow the follow-on trades to complete the fit out as per the programme schedule.

Challenges

The works were originally envisaged to be undertaken from the front elevation of the store. However, due to planning delays the sequencing of the works had to be reversed with all works undertaken from the rear of the unit. This in turn created a further issue due to the presence of a live gas main at the rear of the unit, so to minimise any delay to the overall programme the internal soft strip works were undertaken with an altered methodology. The facade removal works were undertaken as a return visit once planning had been achieved.

Achievements

Having been allowed a 5-week programme to complete our contract works, Rankin D&D handed back all areas one week ahead of programme despite the alteration in sequencing and delay caused by the live gas main. A considerable volume of metal was salvaged from the project which will be recycled off site.
